Terms of Service

Last Updated: April 30, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing and using CarbonGuru, you accept and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Description of Service

CarbonGuru provides carbon footprint analysis and carbon offset and removal purchasing services. CarbonGuru calculates the carbon footprint of goods, services, and business activities you provide information about, and enables you to purchase verified carbon offsets and removals to compensate for that footprint.

How CarbonGuru Works

CarbonGuru uses AI to identify what you purchased, then applies established environmental science — Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (EIO) analysis — to calculate the carbon footprint across the full product lifecycle: raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and delivery. Results are reported in kg CO₂e, the standard unit for comparing climate impact.

Ways to Use CarbonGuru

You can access CarbonGuru through the following modes:

  • Browser extension — Analyzes product pages, shopping carts, webmail, and other web content in real time. Available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. The extension reads page content when you click the CarbonGuru button — it does not passively monitor your browsing.
  • Website — Provides a carbon analysis console for analyzing product URLs and text, a personal carbon dashboard displaying your footprint history and offset portfolio, and account management.
  • Email analysis — Connects to your Gmail account (with your explicit permission) to identify and analyze order confirmations, receipts, and invoices. You may also forward emails to a dedicated analysis address.
  • File analysis — Upload accounting files, financial exports, and transaction records (CSV, XLSX, OFX, QFX, QIF, and other formats) for carbon footprint analysis. CarbonGuru identifies transactions and maps them to carbon estimates.
  • AI agents — Connect CarbonGuru to AI assistants including Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). When you connect CarbonGuru to an AI agent, that agent can perform carbon analysis, search your history, and manage your offset cart on your behalf, subject to the permissions you grant during authorization.
  • No-install access — Analyze products and text directly on the CarbonGuru website or through a guided demo, without installing anything.

Information Sources

CarbonGuru analyzes information you provide, including product pages, shopping carts, email receipts, uploaded files, and pasted text. To generate carbon footprint estimates, preprocessed content is sent to AI service providers acting as sub-processors on CarbonGuru’s behalf. These providers process content solely for product identification and carbon analysis and do not retain or independently use the data.

Carbon Offsets and Removals

CarbonGuru enables you to purchase verified carbon offsets and carbon removals to compensate for the carbon footprint of your purchases and activities. Offset and removal products are sourced from leading providers:

  • Frontier (via Stripe Climate) — Funds permanent carbon removal technologies including direct air capture, enhanced weathering, biomass carbon removal, and other frontier approaches. Frontier is an advance market commitment that aggregates demand from buyers to accelerate the development of carbon removal.
  • CNaught — Provides diversified carbon credit portfolios including both offset projects (emission reduction through renewable energy, forest protection, and similar measures) and removal projects (active CO₂ removal from the atmosphere through biochar, enhanced weathering, and related methods).

All credits are retired on your behalf through verified registries (Verra, Gold Standard, Puro.earth, and others). Every purchase includes a certificate with project details, registry links, and retirement records. Payments are processed by Stripe.

3. Accounts and Subscriptions

You may use certain CarbonGuru features through a free demo. Creating a full account requires email verification. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account.

CarbonGuru offers subscription tiers that determine the features and usage limits available to you. Free accounts receive a Lead-tier subscription. Paid tiers and their terms are described on the CarbonGuru website. We reserve the right to modify subscription features and pricing with reasonable notice.

4. User Responsibilities

You are responsible for:

  • Maintaining the security of your account
  • All activities that occur under your account
  • Ensuring you have authority to grant access to any email account or third-party service you connect
  • The accuracy of information you provide for analysis
  • Complying with the terms of any third-party services you connect to CarbonGuru (such as Gmail or AI agent platforms)

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the service for any illegal purpose
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems
  • Interfere with the proper functioning of the service
  • Submit content designed to exploit or disrupt our analysis systems
  • Use automated means to access the service in a manner that exceeds reasonable use, except through authorized integrations (such as AI agents connected via MCP)
  • Resell, redistribute, or commercially exploit CarbonGuru’s data or analysis results without authorization

6. Gmail API Usage

By connecting your Gmail account, you authorize CarbonGuru to access your email messages using Google’s Gmail API with read-only access. CarbonGuru cannot modify, delete, or send emails on your behalf.

CarbonGuru accesses only order confirmations, receipts, and invoices for the purpose of carbon footprint analysis. Email content is processed in memory and is not stored after product data has been extracted.

To extract product information from emails, preprocessed email content is sent to AI service providers acting as sub-processors on CarbonGuru’s behalf. These providers process content solely for product identification and do not retain or independently use the data.

CarbonGuru’s use of Gmail data complies with the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

You may revoke Gmail access at any time through your CarbonGuru account settings or through Google Account Permissions.

7. AI Agent Integrations

When you connect CarbonGuru to an AI agent (such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot) via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), you authorize that agent to interact with CarbonGuru on your behalf within the scope of permissions granted during OAuth authorization. CarbonGuru does not control the AI agent’s behavior outside of its interaction with our service. You are responsible for reviewing and understanding the terms and privacy practices of any AI agent platform you connect.

8. Carbon Offset and Removal Purchases

Carbon offsets and removals purchased through CarbonGuru are fulfilled by our providers, Frontier (via Stripe Climate) and CNaught. Once carbon credits have been retired on a public registry, purchases are non-refundable, as retirement is an irreversible action.

CarbonGuru does not guarantee the accuracy of carbon footprint estimates. Estimates are based on publicly available lifecycle assessment data and established environmental science methods, and may differ from the actual environmental impact of specific products or activities. Offset and removal purchases are made based on these estimates.

9. Data and Privacy

Your use of CarbonGuru is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights. By using the service, you consent to the practices described in the Privacy Policy.

10. Intellectual Property

CarbonGuru and its content, features, and functionality are owned by CarbonGuru and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You retain ownership of the personal information you provide to CarbonGuru and your individual analysis results. CarbonGuru owns all anonymized, aggregated, and de-identified data derived from the use of the service, including but not limited to product classifications, carbon footprint models, emission factor mappings, and analytical methods. CarbonGuru may use this anonymized data to improve the service, develop new features, and enhance the accuracy of carbon footprint estimates.

11. Limitation of Liability

CarbonGuru is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including but not limited to the accuracy of carbon footprint estimates, the environmental impact of purchased offsets or removals, or the actions of third-party services you connect to your account.

12. Termination

You may terminate your account at any time through your account settings or by contacting us. We reserve the right to terminate or suspend access to our service for violations of these terms.

Upon termination, your Gmail connection (if any) will be disconnected and tokens revoked. Your carbon footprint history will be retained unless you request deletion.

13. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these terms at any time. Material changes will be communicated through the service or by email. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the modified terms.

14. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
