Install the Browser Extension

Firefox Installation

1. Click “Add to Firefox” above to visit the official CarbonGuru add-on page
2. Click “Add to Firefox” on the Mozilla Add-ons page
3. Firefox will prompt you to install — click “Add” to confirm
4. Look for the CarbonGuru icon in your browser toolbar. If you don’t see it, click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions) in the toolbar, find CarbonGuru in the list, and click the gear icon → “Pin to Toolbar”
5. Click the icon and sign in with your CarbonGuru account

Chrome Installation

1. Click “Add to Chrome” above to visit the official CarbonGuru extension page on the Chrome Web Store
2. Click “Add to Chrome” on the Chrome Web Store page
3. Chrome will prompt you to install — click “Add extension” to confirm
4. Pin the extension to your toolbar — Click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions) in the Chrome toolbar, find CarbonGuru in the list, and click the pin icon so it stays visible
5. Click the CarbonGuru icon and sign in with your account

Note: This extension also works with Microsoft Edge and Brave browsers. You can install it directly from the Chrome Web Store in those browsers.

Self-hosted Chrome extension — installation

1. Download the extension — save carbonguru-chrome.zip to a location you can find again (Downloads or Desktop works well).
2. Extract the ZIP file
   • Windows: Right-click the ZIP → “Extract All” → choose a folder
   • macOS: Double-click the ZIP to extract
   • Linux: Right-click → “Extract Here”, or run unzip carbonguru-chrome.zip
3. Open the Chrome Extensions page — type chrome://extensions in the address bar, or go to Menu (⋮) → More Tools → Extensions.
4. Enable Developer mode — toggle the “Developer mode” switch in the top-right corner. New buttons will appear (“Load unpacked”, “Pack extension”, etc.).
5. Load the extension
   • Click “Load unpacked”
   • Navigate to the extracted folder (the one containing manifest.json)
   • Select the folder and click “Select Folder” (Windows) or “Open” (macOS)
6. Verify installation — CarbonGuru should now appear on the extensions page. Pin it to your toolbar (puzzle-piece icon → pin), then click the CarbonGuru icon and sign in.

Self-hosted extension notes

• Developer mode must stay on. Chrome requires Developer mode to keep unpacked extensions active. Turning it off will disable CarbonGuru.
• Updating: When a new build is released, download the new ZIP, extract it to the same folder (replacing the old files), then click the refresh icon (🔄) on the CarbonGuru card at chrome://extensions.
• “Errors” button on the extension card: This is normal for unpacked extensions and does not affect functionality.

Safari — iOS (iPhone & iPad)

1. Click “Get on App Store (iOS)” above, or search for “CarbonGuru” in the App Store on your iPhone or iPad
2. Tap “Get” to download and install the app
3. Enable the extension — Open Settings → Safari → Extensions, find CarbonGuru, and toggle it on. Grant permission for “All Websites” when prompted
4. Tap the extension icon in Safari’s address bar (you may need to tap the puzzle piece icon first) and sign in with your CarbonGuru account

Safari — macOS

1. Click “Download for macOS Safari” above to download CarbonGuru.app.zip
2. Unzip the file and move CarbonGuru.app to your Applications folder
3. Open the app — macOS may block unsigned apps by default. Use one of these methods to bypass Gatekeeper:
   
   Option 1: Right-click (or Control-click) on CarbonGuru.app → Select “Open” → Click “Open” in the dialog
   Option 2: Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Click “Open Anyway” next to the blocked app message
   Option 3: Run in Terminal: xattr -cr /Applications/CarbonGuru.app then double-click to open
4. Confirm extension registration — The app will show a window confirming the extension is installed
5. Open Safari Settings → Extensions → Enable “CarbonGuru”
6. Show the icon in your toolbar — If the CarbonGuru icon doesn’t appear in the toolbar, right-click (or Control-click) the toolbar area and select “Customize Toolbar…”, then drag the CarbonGuru icon into the toolbar
7. Click the CarbonGuru icon in the toolbar and sign in

Android (PWA)

1. Click “Install PWA” above or visit carbonguru.io/app in Chrome on your Android device
2. Sign in with your CarbonGuru account
3. Install the app — Chrome will show an “Install app” banner at the bottom of the screen, or tap the three-dot menu → “Install app” (or “Add to Home screen”)
4. Open CarbonGuru from your home screen — it runs as a standalone app
5. Share product pages — On any shopping site, tap the Share button and select CarbonGuru to analyze the product’s carbon footprint

Note: The Android PWA works with Chrome, Edge, and Samsung Internet. You can also use the bookmarklet to analyze pages directly from any mobile browser — visit your CarbonGuru dashboard for setup instructions.
