Email Forwarding Setup

Forward order receipts from any email account to CarbonGuru. Email forwarding works with Outlook, Yahoo, work email, or any provider that supports forwarding.

Prerequisites

  • โœ… CarbonGuru account created and logged in
  • โœ… Access to the email account you want to forward from

How Email Forwarding Works

CarbonGuru uses a unique token system to identify your forwarded emails. When you forward an order receipt with your personal token, CarbonGuru automatically processes it and calculates the carbon footprint.

Step 1: Generate Your Email Token

Your email token is a unique identifier that links forwarded emails to your CarbonGuru account.

  1. Visit the Gmail & Email Settings page
  2. Scroll to the “Email Forwarding” section
  3. Click “Generate Token”
  4. Your token will appear (format: CG-XXXXXXXX)
  5. Copy and save this token – you will need it for forwarding

Tip: Save your token somewhere accessible, like a note in your email app or a browser bookmark.

Step 2: Forward Order Receipts

When you receive an order confirmation or receipt email:

  1. Forward the email to: email_processing@carbonguru.io
  2. Include your token in the subject line or email body
  3. Send the email

Example Subject Lines

  • Fwd: Your Amazon Order - CG-ABC12345
  • CG-ABC12345 - Order Confirmation from Target
  • Receipt from Walmart CG-ABC12345

Step 3: Set Up Automatic Forwarding (Optional)

For hands-free processing, configure your email client to automatically forward order receipts.

Microsoft Outlook

  1. Go to Settings โ†’ Mail โ†’ Rules
  2. Click “Add new rule”
  3. Name: “Forward to CarbonGuru”
  4. Condition: Subject or body contains “order” OR “receipt” OR “confirmation”
  5. Action: Forward to email_processing@carbonguru.io
  6. In the forwarding template, add your token to the subject
  7. Save the rule

Yahoo Mail

  1. Go to Settings โ†’ More Settings โ†’ Filters
  2. Click “Add new filter”
  3. Filter name: “CarbonGuru Forwarding”
  4. Set conditions for order-related emails
  5. Action: Forward to email_processing@carbonguru.io
  6. Save the filter

Apple Mail / iCloud

  1. Go to Mail โ†’ Preferences โ†’ Rules
  2. Click “Add Rule”
  3. Set conditions for order emails (subject contains “order”, “receipt”, etc.)
  4. Action: Forward to email_processing@carbonguru.io
  5. Click OK to save

Other Email Providers

Look for “Rules”, “Filters”, or “Auto-forward” in your email settings. Most email providers support automatic forwarding based on subject or sender.

Step 4: View Your Results

  • Forwarded receipts are processed automatically (usually within a few minutes)
  • Results appear in your Email Footprints page
  • You will see the retailer, items, and calculated carbon footprint

Troubleshooting

Email Not Processing

  • Ensure your token (CG-XXXXXXXX) is included in the subject or body
  • Check that you forwarded to the correct address: email_processing@carbonguru.io
  • Wait a few minutes – processing can take up to 5 minutes
  • Check your Email Footprints page for any error messages

Token Not Working

  • Verify you are using the correct token from your Email Settings page
  • Tokens are case-sensitive – copy/paste to avoid typos
  • If your token was compromised, generate a new one from the settings page

Partial or Missing Data

  • Some retailers format receipts differently – we may not extract all items
  • Image-only receipts cannot be processed – text-based emails work best
  • Contact us if you consistently see issues with a specific retailer
