What CarbonGuruBot Does
CarbonGuruBot is an automated fetcher used exclusively to read product pages on the storefronts of merchants who have installed the CarbonGuru embedded offsetting snippet. When a merchant enables carbon footprint display and offsetting on their store, CarbonGuruBot visits that merchant’s own product URLs — only URLs on the merchant’s registered domain — to fetch page content for carbon footprint analysis. It does not crawl the web at large, and it never visits pages outside a specific merchant’s own storefront that the merchant has explicitly connected to CarbonGuru.
How to Identify CarbonGuruBot
CarbonGuruBot identifies itself with the following User-Agent string on every request:
CarbonGuruBot/1.0 (+https://carbonguru.io/bot)
This is an honest-identity crawler — it never spoofs a browser User-Agent and never uses anti-detection or stealth browsing techniques.
CarbonGuru separately operates an unrelated stealth fetch lane used only for our consumer browser extension’s on-demand, user-initiated page analysis (a shopper actively clicking the CarbonGuru button on a page they are already viewing). CarbonGuruBot is not part of that lane and is used only for merchant-invited catalog acquisition.
Egress IP Addresses
Requests from CarbonGuruBot originate from one of the following addresses:
- Development: 208.113.211.112
- Production: 208.113.210.159 (published in advance so merchants and firewalls can allowlist it ahead of time — CarbonGuruBot is not yet live in production; this address is pending promotion)
robots.txt
CarbonGuruBot honors robots.txt on every domain it visits. If a merchant’s robots.txt disallows the paths CarbonGuruBot needs to read, CarbonGuruBot will not fetch them. Any resulting gap in carbon footprint coverage for that merchant is expected in that case, not a bug.
Rate Limits and Behavior
CarbonGuruBot only visits a merchant’s storefront after that merchant has explicitly enabled embedded offsetting and connected their store to CarbonGuru. It fetches product pages at a modest, capped rate — bounded by the merchant’s plan-level daily acquisition allowance — and never scrapes a site it has not been invited to.
Opt Out
If you are a CarbonGuru merchant and want CarbonGuruBot to stop visiting your store, disconnect Embedded Offsetting from your CarbonGuru account, or contact us and we will stop immediately.
